The Pros and Cons of Dentures vs. Dental Implants in Coral Springs

With advances in dental technology, there are a multitude of options available to replace missing teeth and supplement existing ones. Two of the most common solutions are dentures and dental implants. Each has unique benefits and challenges, but the right choice depends on your lifestyle, budget, and personal preferences. There are plenty of dentists in Coral Springs ready to help, so let’s look at the pros and cons of both dentures and dental implants to find the right option for you.

What are dentures?

Dentures are common removable devices designed to replace some or all of your teeth. They’re typically made from acrylic material that’s custom-fitted to rest inside your mouth. Dentures are worn throughout the day before being removed at night for cleaning and to promote your oral health. When properly fitted and cared for, dentures can restore your ability to eat, speak, and smile with confidence.

Pros of dentures

Here are some advantages that dentures offer:

  • Affordability: Dentures often cost less upfront, making them an accessible option to replace missing teeth
  • Easy process: Since they don’t require invasive surgery, it’s easy to obtain dentures in Coral Springs quickly when you need them. Often, it only takes a few visits to the dentist to get impressions made and the devices fit before you can start using them.
  • Flexibility: Dentures aren’t permanent, meaning they can be adjusted or repaired fairly simply. If you end up needing more due to further tooth loss, your dentist can work with you to add to the dentures you already have without too much fuss.

Cons of dentures

Dentures also come with several drawbacks, including:

  • Maintenance: Dentures require regular nightly care and maintenance, both to extend the lifespan of the device and to avoid oral health issues like swollen and infected gums.
  • Comfort: Improperly set dentures could cause discomfort if they’re not 100% stable, and they could rub or scrape against sore spots on the gums.
  • Shorter lifespans: Dentures aren’t permanent. They may need to be replaced as early as seven years after you get them.1

What are dental implants?

Dental implants are more permanent solutions for lost or missing teeth. When you receive dental implants, a small titanium post is surgically placed into the jawbone. After the metal has fused to the bone, a crown is placed to create a realistic, artificial tooth. Some people may feel more confident with implants as they may be less noticeable than dentures or other options.

Pros of dental implants

Dental implants offer various benefits, such as the following:

  • Long-lasting: Dental implants are made of a material that’s designed not to decay. With proper care and maintenance, they can last a very long time.
  • Natural look: The crowns placed on top of dental implants are designed to look and feel just like real teeth.
  • Convenience: You don’t need any special cleaners or devices to care for your implants. Just regular brushing, flossing, and oral care are necessary to keep them looking their best.

Cons of dental implants

Here are some drawbacks of dental implants:

  • Longer process: Inserting dental implants is a process that can take several months. You may have to consult with several different types of specialists before and during the process, and there is a healing period between the metal post being inserted and the artificial tooth being placed on top.2
  • Higher cost: Dental implants have a higher upfront investment than dentures, especially if you’re replacing a large number of teeth.
  • Surgical procedure: If you’re uncomfortable with the idea of surgery in and around your jaw, dental implants might not be the best option. You may have to be put under general anesthesia throughout the process, which can be uncomfortable for some people.

What option is right for you?

There’s no one-size-fits-all solution to the question of dentures vs. dental implants. While dentures can be a quicker and simpler process, they require regular care and maintenance that’s not needed with dental implants. Speak to your dentist about the options available, especially if you suffer from bone loss, gum health issues, or you’re a regular smoker, which might limit your options. No matter what option you pick, you’ll be one step closer to a happier and healthier smile for years to come.
