By buying local, more of your money stays in your community, supporting local entrepreneurs and creating jobs in your area. The best part? Supporting local businesses can also benefit you. Using your Canadian credit card, you can earn valuable rewards while keeping your dollars close to home.

Here’s a list of ways you can earn while supporting your community.

Earn rewards on dining

Many rewards credit cards offer bonus points or extra cash back on dining or takeout purchases. By paying with your credit card, you can enjoy all the local cuisine your community has to offer while earning rewards.

Whether you frequent a particular restaurant or want to explore all of the options in your area, the right credit card can help you earn rewards at neighbourhood diners, taverns and cafes.

Earn rewards for everyday shopping

Whether you need to pick up groceries or fill your tank, consider skipping the chain locations and visiting a local store or gas station instead. Most small businesses use card readers, which allow you to earn rewards when you shop with your credit card.

When local small businesses like your gym, cafe or bakery accept credit cards, you can earn rewards on everyday items.

Be mindful of credit card transaction fees

Every time you use your credit card, the business is charged a small processing fee to accept card payments. To cover this cost, some stores might require minimum purchase amounts for credit card transactions, or the merchant may charge a small fee when you choose to pay with your credit card. Many small businesses will simply absorb the processing cost, however.

Explore local loyalty programs

Small businesses may participate in loyalty programs through services like  Local Public Eatery and TapMango.

With the Local Public Eatery, you can earn rewards when you eat and drink at local participating neighbourhood pubs and restaurants.

TapMango allows local businesses to set up their own apps and loyalty programs. You provide your phone number, make a purchase with your credit card and earn rewards.

Find a cashback app for local businesses

Cashback apps like Paymi, Caddle or Checkout 51 allow you to earn when you shop at participating stores.

With Paymi, simply download the app, link your credit card and shop at participating stores. You can earn cashback rewards and redeem them through Interac e-transfer.

Using Caddle, download the app, browse through cashback opportunities and start earning. Checkout 51 requires you to upload or email a photo of your receipt to validate your purchase.

Supporting local businesses can help your community thrive

Shopping local is a simple way to support your community, and you don’t have to give up the perks of your credit card. By combining the right card with local loyalty programs and apps, you can earn rewards while helping local businesses flourish.
